In case you haven’t guessed, it’s Jenny writing this time. The first couple of days post-surgery were definitely a bit rough. Yesterday morning, the anesthesiologist came to see me about my nausea. He gave me something stronger for it, and had me get off the pain pump. That was definitely a good choice. Since yesterday afternoon, I have just been on ibuprofen and a muscle relaxer – no narcotics. Mike slowly fed me a croissant until my stomach started to come back to normal, and I actually had a proper appetite this morning.
I really feel so much better today. Yesterday I still couldn’t concentrate to read or watch anything or even really carry on a conversation. All my hospital-mates have been surprised this morning because I’m such a different person. I can laugh at jokes and have finished another book already today. Mike and I just went for a nice walk around the building outside, and I feel fine walking around. I get tired a little easily and have to rest, but that’s fine. I’m not in a lot of pain at all – the only thing that troubles me much is moving my neck forward and back. It’s stiff from side to side, still, but not painful. I don’t really notice the incision, just the large dressing that’s still on it from the surgery. I’m looking forward to when they’ll let me have something smaller there. They took my IV out this morning, too, so I’m not fettered by any hospital stuff anymore. I really feel like it’s going to be upward and onward from here and I’ll be able to get back to things pretty quickly.
The hospital is really in a lovely rural setting. There’s a working farm right next door (which can be a little noisy at times – especially as it’s light enough to work outside until quite late.) The birds start singing around 4:20 in the morning, and don’t seem to stop all day. There are lovely huge trees around, and huge rhododendrons – more that I think I’ve sen anywhere, even in Georgia. There are lots of neat little gardens and brick/cobblestone paths which make everything feel very quaint. I’m starting to look forward to being able to explore Bremen and more of Germany.
Thank you all for your encouragement and prayers. They are working!
Oh, Jenny, you sound just like your usual self! I can’t believe you are off the pain meds so quickly. Yippee, so happy for you. And the reading and rest sound very therapeutic, physically and mentally. A working farm? How interesting!
Jenny,
I got all teary reading your blog today. You sound just great! Keep moving in that same direction and know that we are all looking forward to your healthy return.
FANTASTIC!!!! Seems like it’s going along our “highest hopes” path vs. something like “expected”. Jenny, your positive attitude and Mike’s unbending support are obviously propelling things, along with the excellent care there. Wonderful that the hospital is in such a bucolic setting! I’d certainly love it! Sounds like excellent subject matter for Mike’s talented lens, with you as a human focal point.
Love ya, Darling Daughter! Dad
Jenny, that’s fantastic news! Your positive attitude (according to my physical therapist) is so very important for a full recovery. Keep it up!!! I hope you’ll have the energy to enjoy the surrounding area and that you find the “sweet spot” between enough rest to heal and enough activity to regain your strength and refresh your spirit. We’re glad that Mike is there to watch over you. We look forward to future messages and to talk to you once you’re back home. I sent Kyle the links you sent and one to the blog. I know he’s watching your progress eagerly as well. Love, Gini
